    Electoral Commission calls on Theresa May to stop digital political advertising

    THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION has called for a crackdown on digital political advertising amid concerns over the influence of digital on ads on elections. It is calling for more transparency to eliminate anonymous 'dark advertising' by clearly labelling all ads from political parties; an end to the misuse of personal data; and tighter monitoring of election spending to ensure campaigners don't go over legal spending limits. It has recommended the creation of an online database of political adverts, a database of records of digital campaign spending, and an increase of the maximum £20,000 fine for breaking electoral law.

    Electoral Commission targets pub goers with beer mat voter registration campaign

    THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION is encouraging pub-goers to utilise time waiting for their mates to register to vote in this May's local elections. The push includes turquoise beer mats which will displayed in more than 900 pubs and bars across England with the text 'Got 5? While you wait for your mates?' and a direction to visit the website to register to vote. It comes after figures that showed a third of voters under 34 were not registered to vote in the May local elections last year.
