    Pearson balances the books with $1bn Penguin sale

    PEARSON has sold a 22% stake in RANDOM HOUSE to German mass media firm Bertelsmann in a deal that values the publisher at £2.75bn. Pearson was forced to put its stake in the publisher up for sale to shore up its balance sheet after a run of profit warnings. Pearson is intending to use the $1bn proceeds from to sale to finance a move to establish itself as a digital education publisher.

    Guardian Media Group gets new group comms chief O'Grady from Pearson

    GUARDIAN MEDIA GROUP has appointed Brendan O'Grady to the role of group communications director. O'Grady will join in mid-April from PEARSON, where he holds the position of senior vice president for corporate and financial communications. He will report into CEO David Pemsel and editor-in-chief Katharine Viner and will be tasked with media relations, public policy, corporate affairs and internal communications.
