    SSE abandons takeover of rival energy provider Npower as government price cap takes its toll

    SSE will no longer be merging with NPOWER after they were unable to reach an agreement on 'revised commercial terms'. SSE will now explore other options for offloading its energy services arm which could include separating it from the main business as a standalone.

    SSE's merger with Npower gets the all-clear from UK competition watchdog

    SSE and NPOWER will merge as planned now that they have received final clearance from the Competition & Markets Authority. The governing body ruled that there is not enough similarity or rivalry between the two brands for customers to significantly lose out in choice by the merger. Shareholders in SSE will be part-owners of the newly combined business, while Npower parent company Innogy will become minority stakeholders.
