Disney to split nearly $3B media business with Publicis and Omnicom

DISNEY has appointed Publicis and Omnicom to jointly handle its global media business following a competitive pitch. Publicis will oversee Disney+ and parks, while Omnicom will handle channels (including ABC, FOX and Nat Geo) and studios for North America. Omnicom's share is believed to represent more than half of the estimated $3bn business. Disney was reportedly compelled by Epsilon, Publicis' data marketing company, which, along with ZENITH, helped win part of the business with a bespoke solution called Publicis Imagine. Omnicom also offered a bespoke solution called OMG23. CARAT previously handled parks and Horizon Media previously oversaw channels. WPP is to retain the Disney business in India. The review, which began in May and included pitches in Buenos Aires, Mumbai, Tokyo, London and Los Angeles, was conducted with the help of MediaLink.

Mindshare is expected to give up Fox account in Europe

MINDSHARE will not defend the £150m FOX account it currently holds in Europe. The decision comes as DISNEY reviews its £3.2bn global media planning and buying requirements. WPP is not expected to pitch for Disney's business except in Asia, where Mindshare will defend the Star TV service in India. WPP is seeking to avoid conflict with other clients such as Comcast, owner of NBCUniversal and Sky, currently handled by ESSENCE and MEDIACOM respectively. Disney acquired Fox's entertainment assets earlier this year.

MediaLink is advising on the review, and RFPs for the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific were sent out in June. OMD is the major incumbent on Disney, while Dentsu Aegis Network, Publicis Media and WPP are leading incumbents on Fox.
